Mr. Calvin L. “Cal” Sheffield a PIMS Alumnus was recently selected to the University of Pittsburgh Varsity Letter Club Awardees of Distinction. Basically, the University of Pittsburgh’s “Athletic Hall of Fame.”
Cal Sheffield came to Pitt in the fall of 1960 as the 2nd black athlete to receive a full scholarship in Pitt basketball history after a stellar career at New Brighton High School. Cal excelled during his time at Pitt, where he lead the team in scoring during his sophomore and senior years, became a member of the 1000-point club, ranked 6th of all-time in Quickest to 1000 Career Points, and earned All East and Honorable Mention All American honors.
After earning several degrees from Pitt, Cal graduated Magna Cum Laude from the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science in 1967. As a licensed funeral director, Cal opened the Calvin L Sheffield Funeral Home, Inc. in 1977, in the Manchester neighborhood of Pittsburgh. The business operates to this day, and has expanded to include branches in the Beltzhoover section of Pittsburgh and New Castle, the Union Cemetery in Monaca, PA, and the Calvin L Sheffield Financial Services, Inc. in Windermere, FL.
