In Remembrance
The Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science joins the funeral service profession in mourning the sudden passing of Mike Nicodemus, a longtime leader in cremation education, former member of the PIMS Board of Directors, and a familiar presence at the Institute for many years.
Mike’s relationship with PIMS was a lasting one. He served on the PIMS Board of Directors for 12 years, sharing his professional experience and supporting the Institute’s mission of educating the next generation of funeral service professionals.
Mike’s obituary is available through Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home
Sharing His Knowledge
Mike was also a regular presence at PIMS through the National Funeral Directors Association’s cremation certification programs.
.
For years, PIMS served as a regional host for the program, bringing funeral directors from throughout the area to the Institute for specialized education in crematory operations. PIMS students were also able to attend, giving them the unique opportunity to learn alongside practicing funeral professionals while gaining a deeper understanding of cremation and the responsibilities associated with crematory operations.
Mike brought extensive knowledge and practical experience to those programs, but just as importantly, he was willing to share it. His visits gave our students access to an experienced professional who devoted much of his career to advancing education and standards in cremation.
A Lasting Connection to PIMS
Mike’s contributions to PIMS took different forms over the years, from his service on the Board of Directors to the time he spent teaching within our classrooms. In each role, he contributed to the education and preparation of future funeral service professionals.
For an institution built around Knowledge, Skills and Service, there is something particularly meaningful about professionals who are willing to share what they have learned with those preparing to follow them into the profession.
Mike Nicodemus was one of those professionals, and PIMS was fortunate to have benefited from his knowledge, service and friendship for so many years.
The Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science extends its condolences to Mike’s family, friends, colleagues at the National Funeral Directors Association, and the many members of the funeral service profession who knew and learned from him.
We are grateful that PIMS and our students were among them.
