The Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science recently hosted its annual Job Fair, bringing together students, alumni, and funeral service employers for a highly engaged and career-focused event.

Held on campus on March 13, the PIMS Job Fair continues to stand out as a direct bridge between mortuary education and real-world employment opportunities.

Strong Attendance and High Engagement

This year’s event saw over 100 students and alumni in attendance, all actively seeking internships and career opportunities within funeral service.

The level of engagement throughout the day was exceptional. Employers conducted interviews for nearly four hours, with consistent lines forming outside interview spaces. Students were not only present—they were prepared, engaged, and ready to enter the profession.

A More Intentional Approach to Hiring

Unlike a traditional job fair setup, PIMS uses a structured format designed to create more meaningful connections.

Nearly 20 funeral service organizations—representing both the tristate region and national firms—began the event by presenting to all attendees. Each firm introduced their organization, shared information about their operations, and outlined opportunities available to new graduates.

Following the presentations, students selected the firms they were most interested in meeting with. This allowed for more focused conversations and ensured that both students and employers were engaging with genuine interest.

Many students met with four to five different firms throughout the day, creating multiple pathways for employment.

Direct Access to Funeral Service Employers

Participating employers represented a wide range of opportunities within the profession, from locally respected funeral homes to larger regional and national organizations.

By bringing these firms directly to campus, PIMS provides students with immediate access to owners, hiring managers and decision-makers. This hands-on connection is a key part of preparing students for successful entry into funeral service.

Positive Employer Feedback

Feedback from employers following the event was overwhelmingly positive.

Many noted that PIMS students presented themselves professionally and were well-prepared for interviews. Employers also highlighted the strength of the candidate pool, with several students aligning closely with their current hiring needs.

The consistent engagement throughout the event reinforced the value of this format and the readiness of PIMS students to transition into the field.

Preparing Students for the Next Step

In addition to employer presentations and interviews, students were encouraged to come prepared with resumes and to approach each interaction professionally.

The structure of the event, combined with student preparation, created an environment that closely mirrors real-world hiring processes within funeral service.

A Direct Path from Education to Career

The PIMS Job Fair reflects the institute’s ongoing commitment to student success beyond the classroom.

By connecting students and alumni directly with employers, the event provides a clear pathway from education into the profession. For many attendees, it represents one of the first major steps toward securing a position in funeral service.

As demand for qualified professionals continues to grow, opportunities like this ensure that PIMS graduates are positioned to move confidently into their careers.
